Ranarak Tarandis is a sorceror among the ranks of the Circle of Spellcasters, Guardians of the world of Khir Khira and its denizens, and protector of the Crystal of Kendora, a powerful magical artifact dating back to almost the very beginning of time itself. His eyes in human form are a deep green. He has wavy mid length black hair. He dresses only in black and always will continue to do so. He isn't too tall, standing at about 5'7", and isn't too powerfully built, weighing roughly 160 lbs. He has lived for 300,516 years, although he appears to be a human of 25.
Ranarak was born in a world now deceased, called Atreon. His parents
were abusive of him, having never wanted this child in the first place.
His father drank, beat him and verbally abused him, while his mother merely
neglected him. Eventually, he was sent off to live with the mage Dathareus,
a cruel man, who tormented his students, and believed that they should
work out their own problems with the magic they wrought. One day, as Ranarak
was experimenting with magic in his lab, the spell backfired, and he was
instantly transformed into a black alleycat with luminous green eyes.
Dathaerus, upon seeing Ranarak's dilemma, laughed and taunted him, then said "Ranarak Tarandis hardly seems a fitting name for a cat... I believe I shall call you.. Rannis." Rannis was upset over his new form, the wizard refusing to change him back to his former self. So in this form he remained for many years. But still he continued to study magic, hoping to learn to reverse the spell he cast on himself. Eventually he did and he rose once again to his human form, only to find that it felt awkward... he was used to being a cat... even liked it. He changed himself back into a cat and remained that way. He later discovered that a larger version was not only possible but handy, thus his third form, a panther.
After learning all he could from the old mage, he took to wandering. He traveled the countryside, moving from town to town, city to city, searching for ways to better his magical skill.
At the age of 25, Rannis was wandering through the forests, when he came upon a partially concealed cave. Instinct had begun to come to him... and curiosity won him over. He ventured into the cave to explore, plunging deep into its cavernous depths. He came upon a spring in the very center of the cave... a glowing orb rested upon a platform. He felt drawn to it. He touched it. The orb exploded violently and Rannis lost consciousness. When he awoke, he was outside the cave once more, but it was gone. It was long after that that Rannis learned of the curse bestowed upon him by the orb... eternal, or near eternal life.
He soon found that he couldn't die... well... he could die, but he would merely fade away to a wonderous place for a time until he finally would return to his body. The length of time he stayed from his body varied slightly, although he had, truthfully only died three times.
His first death was by his own hand. After he watched his friends grow old and die before him, while he stayed the same, he flung himself from a cliff. His body was battered and broken, and he died... but his spirit returned to his body after a time, as it was recovered by fishermen.
The second death was a murder. A thief he thwarted stabbed him in the back. Once again, he returned to that ethereal oneness with the universe. And once again he returned to his body... with full knowledge of his killer's identity and location. The murderer spent the rest of his life hopping about the swamp catching bugs on his tongue as Rannis exacted his revenge... and polymorphed the thief into a frog.
The third death occurred to save another's life. A warlord had fallen upon a village and slaughtered many. Rannis helped with powerful magic to drive him and his men out. But not before they took a brutal toll upon the lives of the villagers. A small lad, his family still alive, was dying, lacking the strength to go on. Rannis, lacking magic related to the Life Sphere, did the only thing he could do to save the child's life... he bestowed upon the child his own lifeforce. And with the renewed vigor, the child was restored... while Rannis died, returning once again to the void... only to come back again at a later time.
After a time, he linked up with the Circle of Spellcasters... the Guardians of the World of Khir Khira. Charit, who was to become his best friend, was the one who introduced him to the Circle. Rannis worked his way up through the ranks, hoping that the 1st Circle members could help him find out more about his curse.
Throughout the course of Rannis's long life, he met many people, fell in love many times. He has had 335 wives through the millenia. His most recent being Lore Tarandis (aka Lore Mistress), whom he loves with the very core of his being.
Rannis knows much magic that he has learned. He has mastered Energy/Matter magics and has very nearly mastered Transportation magics. In the category of Elemental magics, Rannis knows very little Air magics, and very little Earth magics. He knows much of fire and water magics, however. His Light magic is around average, and he wouldn't dream of touching Dark magic. He knows much in the sphere of death magics, but knows nothing of life magics.
His Clairvoyant magic skill is mediocre and he only knows a few necromantic spells. He also possesses a different form of magic, which he gained through a mage link from a paladin... soul magic. He can heal serious wounds through this and even weild a paladin's holy sword. Rannis was born with certain special abilites, namely, the ability to smell Undead within about a mile and a certain danger sense, which alerts him to nearby threats. Another type of magic that Rannis gained through a link with a wizard is 'Tym Magic'. This magic allows him to travel not only from place to place, but from time to time. He has been to the past and has been far into the future. Tis where he acquired his most stylin' shades. ;)
Rannis's personality is that of the sometimes annoying, often hyperactive, but always the charmer towards ladies. He can be counted on as a friend and will help even those who don't consider him a friend. He doesn't discriminate against people, because this is a human trait. He tries to distance himself from the human race whenever possible, for they have done so many horrible things. He enjoys teaching very much, especially children, although it would be difficult, if not impossible, to get him to admit that he likes kids.
Summed up... Rannis is very unpredictable, but trustworthy. One could trust him with their life.
